Many patients ask about our use of mesh. While surfing the internet, some websites make claims that mesh is somehow unsafe, and that repairing hernias without mesh is a better technique.
We believe that surgery is a science, and that doctors need to base their treatment recommendations on the results of scientific
studies.
Through many years of studying hernia repair, researchers have consistently found that mesh hernia repairs not only last longer, but they have less pain. Anything you read on the internet that says the opposite is just not true.
Here’s the proof: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12519568
This is from the United States National Library of Medicine. It is a research paper that examined TWENTY different studies of mesh versus non-mesh hernia repairs. The conclusion was “There was strong evidence that fewer hernias recur after mesh repair than following non-mesh repair.”
The use of mesh also allows our patients to get back to work almost immediately with no restrictions. Many of our patients are back to full duty in a few days.
We use extra-lightweight mesh, which has been proven to cause less pain and discomfort. Here’s the proof for this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0053275/
We are proud to perform mesh hernia repairs on our patients. It has been proven to be the strongest repair.
